S.D. Highway 46 - From Beresford to Iowa State Line


Project Summary:

This project is a fifteen-and-one-half mile-long full reconstruction of S.D. Highway 46 in Union and Lincoln Counties. The project begins at the east edge of the city of Beresford and ends at the Iowa state line. Work on this project will consist of full roadway grading, structure replacement, culvert replacement, interim surfacing, and new permanent signing.

Construction is broken into three phases and covers two construction seasons.

Phase one starts at the east edge of Beresford and ends at the S.D. Highway 11/S.D. Highway 46 intersection. Work in phase one will be completed during the 2024 season with an interim completion date of Nov. 2024.

Phase two will be from the Highway 11/ Highway 46 intersection to the Hudson curve.

Phase three will be completed under traffic from the Hudson curve to the Iowa state line. Phase two and three will be completed during the 2025 construction season.

During construction, the highway will be closed to through traffic. Access to residents and landowners adjacent to the project will be maintained, but travelers are encouraged to use the signed detour route around the project. The detour route around the project for phase one includes Interstate 29 to Lincoln County 152 and Highway 11. Phase two detour includes Highway 11 to Lincoln Co 152 and Lincoln Co 143. Phase three will be completed under traffic using temporary widening.

S.D. Highway 46 from Beresford to S.D. Highway 11 remains open through the winter months. This section of Highway 46 currently has temporary surfacing for this multi-year project. The speed limit is reduced to 55mph through the work zone. Please drive with caution.

Nov. 19, 2024 - Press Release
:

On Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024, S.D. Highway 46 from Beresford to S.D. Highway 11 is scheduled to reopen to traffic. This portion of Highway 46 has been closed since April 2024 as part of a multi-year reconstruction project. Motorists should be aware that this reopened section of Highway 46 is temporary surfacing which consists of a chip sealed blotter from the east edge of the City of Beresford to just west of Highway 11. Pavement markings and highway delineation will be installed for the length of the new grade.

With the temporary surfacing in place, motorists should expect a rougher road surface. A posted reduced speed limit of 55 mph will be in effect until final operations are completed for this multi-year reconstruction project.

Phase two of the reconstruction project from Highway 11 to the Iowa Stateline will be completed during the summer of 2025. The prime contractor for the $24.9 million project is Foothills Contracting of Webster, SD. The overall completion date for the multi-year project is November 2025.

A separate project contract for final paving and surfacing is scheduled for 2026.

Oct. 30, 2024:

Sept. 15, 2024 – Oct. 15, 2024, Completed WorkHeavy grading has been completed for this year’s portion of the project. Finish grading from 478th Avenue to Highway 11 is the only remaining grading work. All three lifts of gravel have been placed from 473rd Avenue to 474th Avenue and from 476th Avenue to just west of 477th Avenue. The new box culvert between 475th and 476th Avenue has been completed and gravel has been placed. The interim surfacing has been placed on completed sections of project along with topsoil, seeding, and erosion control. 

Anticipated work Oct. 15, 2024 – Nov. 15, 2024Finish grading will be completed from 478th Avenue to Highway 11. All remaining pipe culverts will be installed. Placement of the gravel surfacing will be completed from 477th Avenue to Highway 11. If the weather permits, the interim surfacing will be placed. If not, a dust control product will be applied to the gravel surface for the winter months and the interim surface will be placed in the spring of 2025. Shaping of topsoil will continue with seeding and erosion control to closely follow. Permanent signing, pavement marking, highway delineation, and mailboxes will be installed prior to opening the road to traffic. It’s anticipated the project will be opened to traffic by the interim completion date of Friday, Nov. 22, 2024.
