KOTA: SDDOT reminds candidates, groups to keep election signs out of highway rights of way

The South Dakota Department of Transportation is reminding the public that political campaign and ballot issue signs are not allowed within state highway rights of way.

Officials say signs placed along highways can create safety hazards and distract drivers from important traffic and directional signage.

SDDOT says highway rights of way are reserved for official traffic signage only, and any unauthorized signs are subject to removal. Crews routinely take down illegal signs when they are spotted or reported.

Those who have signs removed can contact their local SDDOT office to retrieve them.

The department also notes that city ordinances do not override state rules for highway rights of way, even within city limits.
