RAPID CITY, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation says a project to improve intersections on highways 16 and 79 in Rapid City has begun.
The project includes the construction of new turn lanes at the intersections of Highway 16 and Enchantment Road, Tablerock Road, and Promise Road in Rapid City.
Traffic is currently limited to the passing lane in both the northbound and southbound directions as work is currently focused in the median. Once the median work is completed, traffic will be switched to the passing lane and the driving lanes will be closed in each direction for intersection grading and paving.
A 16-foot width restriction is in effect through the work zone and speeds are reduced to 45 mph when workers are present.
The project also includes the construction of turn lanes at Highway 16 and Cosmos Road and at Highway 79 at Black Gap Road. These two intersections are anticipated to begin late April and late May, respectively.
The prime contractor on this $1.1 million project is Mainline Contracting of Rapid City. The overall completion date is Oct. 30, 2020.
Motorists should be prepared for suddenly slowing, stopped, and merging traffic, as well as construction workers and equipment adjacent to the driving lane.
